Alfred Russel Wallace was born on 8 January 1823 in Usk. A British naturalist, explorer and geographer, Wallace independently conceived the theory of evolution by natural selection, at the same time as Charles Darwin. Working as a collector of specimens in the Amazon and then in the Malay Archipelago, he wrote an essay in 1858 that he sent to Darwin, which prompted the joint presentation of their ideas to the Linnean Society. He is regarded as the father of biogeography, and identified a boundary between the fauna of Asia and Australasia known as the Wallace Line. His books include The Malay Archipelago. He was also interested in spiritualism, social reform and land nationalization.
