Rutherford B. Hayes was born on 4 October 1822 in Delaware. The 19th President of the United States, Hayes was an Ohio lawyer who fought as a Union officer in the Civil War and later served as governor. He came to office after the extremely close and disputed election of 1876, which was settled by a special commission, in what became known as the Compromise of 1877. As part of this arrangement, federal troops left the South, ending Reconstruction and the military enforcement of Black citizens' rights. His term saw the Great Railroad Strike of 1877, during which he sent troops to restore order, and an early attempt at civil service reform. He had promised to serve only one term and did not seek re-election.
