Mohammad Ali Jinnah was born on 25 December 1876 in Karachi. A lawyer and politician, Jinnah led the All-India Muslim League and became the founder and first Governor-General of Pakistan. Once a member of the Indian National Congress and an advocate of Hindu-Muslim unity, he later came to support the idea of a separate homeland for the Muslims of British India, endorsed in the Lahore Resolution of 1940. After the British withdrawal, Pakistan was created through the partition of India in 1947, accompanied by mass migrations and communal violence. He died of illness barely a year later, and is revered in Pakistan as the Quaid-i-Azam, or Great Leader.
