Premiere of Thomas & Friends

from 9 October 1984 to 20 January 2021

Thomas & Friends is a British children's television series that premiered on 9 October 1984, and it was based on the Railway Series of books by the Reverend W. Awdry about Thomas the Tank Engine and other locomotives on the fictional island of Sodor. It was produced by Britt Allcroft, and in early years used detailed model trains filmed on miniature sets, with the former Beatle Ringo Starr as the first narrator. The engines have faces and personalities, and the stories center on lessons about responsibility, cooperation and the consequences of vanity. It was shown in many countries and became one of the best-known children's franchises, with toys and spin-offs. From the 2010s it used computer animation, and the series ended in 2021.
