Premiere of Nabucco

9 March 1842

Nabucco is an opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi, with a libretto by Temistocle Solera, based on the biblical story of the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar and the exile of the Jews. It was Verdi's third opera and his first great success, after the failure of his comic opera and a period of personal grief that nearly made him give up composing. The soprano Giuseppina Strepponi, later his wife, sang the role of Abigaille at the premiere at La Scala in Milan. Its chorus of the Hebrew slaves, Va, pensiero, became a symbol of Italian longing for unity and freedom during the Risorgimento. The opera established Verdi as the leading Italian composer of his generation.
