Edward VII was born on 9 November 1841 in Buckingham Palace. A British monarch, Edward VII was the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and waited almost sixty years as Prince of Wales before becoming king in 1901. He had a reputation as a playboy and sportsman, but as king he proved a capable diplomat, helping to arrange the Entente Cordiale with France in 1904, which earned him the name Peacemaker. His reign, known as the Edwardian era, saw social change and an arms race with Germany, and a constitutional crisis over the House of Lords. He was the uncle or grandfather of many European royals. He was succeeded by his son George V.
