Operation Market Garden

from 17 September 1944 to 26 September 1944

Operation Market Garden was an Allied operation in the Netherlands in the Second World War, planned by Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, which tried to seize a series of bridges over the Rhine and other waterways, with the aim of getting around the German Siegfried Line and ending the war quickly. In the Market part, paratroopers of the American 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions and the British 1st Airborne Division landed behind enemy lines, while in the Garden part the British XXX Corps was to advance along a single road to link up with them. The advance was delayed, and the British paratroopers at Arnhem, cut off and facing German armour, were forced to withdraw. The failure to cross the Rhine meant that the war continued into 1945.
