Opening of New Scotland Yard

1890

New Scotland Yard is the name of the headquarters of the Metropolitan Police, the police force responsible for most of Greater London. The name comes from Great Scotland Yard, a street off Whitehall where the force first set up its base, and it was carried to later buildings as the headquarters moved. The first purpose-built New Scotland Yard, designed by Richard Norman Shaw, stands on the Victoria Embankment, and a distinctive revolving sign outside a later building became a well-known image. In 2016 the headquarters moved to the Curtis Green Building on the Embankment, a 1930s structure. The words Scotland Yard are also used in everyday speech to mean the force's detective work.
