The Novgorod Republic was a medieval city-state in northwestern Russia, one of the largest states in Europe, which grew up around the trading city of Novgorod after its citizens expelled the prince of Kyiv's dynasty. Real power belonged to the veche, the assembly of citizens, and to the posadnik, an elected mayor, and the prince was only a hired military leader, whose powers were limited by a contract. Novgorod grew rich from the fur trade and as a member of the Hanseatic network. Its most famous prince, Alexander Nevsky, defeated the Swedes and the Teutonic Knights. The city also left behind many birch-bark letters, which show the daily life of its people. It was annexed by Ivan III of Moscow, ending its independence.
