Kingdom of Sicily

from 1130 to 1816

The Kingdom of Sicily was a state that ruled the island of Sicily and, for much of its history, parts of southern Italy. It was founded when Roger II of the Norman Hauteville family was crowned king in Palermo, uniting territory his family had conquered from the Byzantines, Arabs and Lombards. Under the Normans and later the Hohenstaufen, including Emperor Frederick II, it was among the wealthiest and most culturally mixed courts in Europe, blending Latin, Greek and Arabic traditions. After the Sicilian Vespers of 1282 the island came under the Crown of Aragon while the mainland formed the separate Kingdom of Naples, and the two were reunited as the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies in 1816.
