Neustria

from 511 CE to 977 CE

Neustria was one of the main regions of the Frankish kingdom in the Merovingian period, covering the western part of the realm, between the Loire, the English Channel and the Meuse, with centres such as Paris, Soissons and Rouen. It emerged when the sons of Clovis divided the kingdom, and it often competed with Austrasia in the east. The rivalry was personified by two queens, Fredegund of Neustria and Brunhilda of Austrasia, whose feud filled the sixth and early seventh centuries. In 687, at the Battle of Tertry, Pepin of Herstal, mayor of the palace of Austrasia, defeated the Neustrians, and from then on the Carolingians dominated the kingdom. Later the name remained in use for the western regions of the Frankish realms.
