Austrasia

from 27 November 511 CE to 1 November 751 CE

Austrasia was the eastern part of the Frankish kingdom during the Merovingian era, covering territory along the Rhine and Meuse rivers in today's northeastern France, Belgium, Luxembourg and western Germany. It emerged when the kingdom of Clovis was divided among his sons, with Reims, and later Metz, as important centres. Austrasia often competed with neighbouring Neustria for dominance. Over time real power passed from the Merovingian kings to the mayors of the palace, and a family from Austrasia, the Pippinids, later called the Carolingians, took over this office. Charles Martel and Pepin the Short built their power there, and Pepin eventually deposed the last Merovingian king and became king of the Franks himself.
