League of the Three Emperors

11 October 1873

The League of the Three Emperors, or Dreikaiserbund, was an alliance of the German Empire, Austria-Hungary and Russia, formed on the initiative of the German chancellor Otto von Bismarck to bind the three conservative monarchies together, to isolate France and to prevent Russia from allying with it. It grew out of an earlier convention between Russia and Austria-Hungary signed at Schönbrunn in 1873, which Germany joined. The members pledged to consult each other if one was attacked by another power and to defend the monarchical principle against revolution. The alliance broke down in the Eastern Crisis of the late 1870s over rivalry in the Balkans, was renewed in 1881, and lapsed in 1887, when it was replaced by the Reinsurance Treaty between Germany and Russia.
