Budapest was created in 1873 by the merger of three cities, Buda, Óbuda and Pest, which lay on the two banks of the Danube. The union made a single capital for the Kingdom of Hungary within the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, which had been formed through the Compromise of 1867. The Chain Bridge, opened in 1849, had already joined Buda and Pest, and the following decades brought rapid growth, with the large Parliament building and the grand boulevards. The millennial celebrations of 1896 marked a thousand years since the Magyar settlement and included the opening of the first underground railway on the European continent. Budapest became one of the biggest cities in Europe and is known today for its architecture and thermal baths.
