Launch of WorldCat

26 August 1971

WorldCat is the world's largest union catalogue of libraries, run by the non-profit OCLC, which began in Ohio as the Ohio College Library Center under Frederick Kilgour. It started as a shared online cataloguing system, in which libraries entered the details of a book once so that others could copy them, saving time and cost, and the first online catalogue was used by libraries in Ohio. Over the years, it spread to libraries across the United States and the world, and now includes the holdings of tens of thousands of libraries, with records for books, articles, music and other materials. Readers can search it to find which libraries hold a given item, and it became available on the web in the 2000s.
