Death of Louis Armstrong

6 July 1971

Louis Armstrong died on 6 July 1971 in Corona, aged 69. An American jazz trumpeter, singer and bandleader, Armstrong was born in New Orleans and rose to fame in Chicago and New York in the 1920s. His recordings with the Hot Five and Hot Seven helped to shift jazz from group improvisation toward the virtuoso solo, and he popularised scat singing. His gravelly voice and warm stage personality, which earned him the nickname Satchmo, made him one of the most beloved entertainers in the world. His later hits included What a Wonderful World. He toured widely as an unofficial ambassador of American music and spoke out against racial segregation.
