Launch of Chandrayaan-2

22 July 2019

Chandrayaan-2 was India's second lunar mission, launched by a GSLV Mk III rocket from Sriharikota. It consisted of an orbiter, a lander named Vikram and a small rover named Pragyan, and it aimed to land near the Moon's south pole. The orbiter entered lunar orbit in August 2019, and the lander separated in September and began its powered descent, but contact was lost at an altitude of about two kilometers, and it crashed because of a software problem. The orbiter continued to work for years, mapping the surface and searching for water ice. India's space agency followed with Chandrayaan-3, which landed successfully near the south pole in 2023, making India the fourth country to soft-land on the Moon.
