The Komnenos family was a Byzantine noble house that produced a series of emperors and brought about the revival of the Byzantine Empire in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Alexios I Komnenos came to power in a coup, faced invasions by the Normans and the Seljuk Turks, and sought help from the West, which led to the First Crusade. His successors John II and Manuel I extended Byzantine influence in the Balkans, Anatolia and the Levant, and the period is known as the Komnenian restoration. After Manuel's defeat at Myriokephalon, the empire weakened, and the last Komnenian emperor, Andronikos I, was overthrown. A branch of the family later founded the Empire of Trebizond.
