Kingdom of Naples

from 30 March 1282 to 12 December 1816

The Kingdom of Naples was the state that governed the southern part of the Italian peninsula after the War of the Sicilian Vespers split the former Kingdom of Sicily, with Sicily itself falling to the house of Aragon, and the mainland remaining with the Angevin dynasty. Over the following centuries, the kingdom passed from the Angevins to Aragonese, Spanish and Austrian rulers, and was then ruled by a branch of the Spanish Bourbons. Naples became one of the largest cities in Europe, a major centre of art and music. The kingdom was invaded by the French during the Napoleonic Wars, and in 1816 it was merged with Sicily as the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
