The Kingdom of Jerusalem was the principal Crusader state, established in the Levant after the First Crusade captured Jerusalem. Godfrey of Bouillon was its first ruler, and his brother Baldwin I took the title of king. The kingdom at times stretched from Lebanon to the Sinai, and it relied on military orders such as the Knights Templar and Hospitallers, as well as castles such as Krak des Chevaliers in neighbouring states. In 1187 Saladin defeated its army at the battle of Hattin and took Jerusalem. The kingdom survived for another century as a coastal state centred on Acre, until Acre fell to the Mamluks and the last crusader strongholds were lost.
