Hildegard of Bingen was born in 1098 in Bermersheim vor der Höhe. A German Benedictine abbess, Hildegard became one of the most remarkable figures of the Middle Ages. She experienced visions from childhood, which she recorded in the book Scivias, with the approval of the Church. She founded convents at Rupertsberg and Eibingen, composed a large body of liturgical music and a morality play, and wrote on medicine and natural history in the Physica and Causae et Curae. She corresponded with popes, emperors and kings, and preached in public, which was unusual for a woman. She was canonized in 2012 and proclaimed a Doctor of the Church.
