The Kingdom of Asturias was a small Christian state in the mountains of northern Spain, founded after the Muslim conquest of the Iberian Peninsula by Pelayo, a Visigothic nobleman who defeated a Muslim force at Covadonga. It is traditionally considered the starting point of the Reconquista, the centuries-long process in which the Christian kingdoms expanded south. Under kings such as Alfonso II, who moved the capital to Oviedo, and Alfonso III, the kingdom grew, and the discovery of what was believed to be the tomb of the apostle James at Santiago de Compostela made the region a major pilgrimage centre. In the early tenth century the royal court moved to Leon, and the kingdom became the Kingdom of Leon.
