Jabir ibn Hayyan was born in 721 CE in Tus. An early Islamic alchemist and polymath, Jabir ibn Hayyan is known in Latin Europe as Geber. Around him grew up a large body of writings in Arabic, the Jabirian corpus, which discuss the theory of metals as composed of sulfur and mercury, the preparation of acids and other substances, and distillation methods. Many scholars believe that most of these works were written later by followers, and the details of his own life are very uncertain. His name became associated with the foundations of chemistry, and later Latin works under the name Geber were influential in Europe.
