The Jin dynasty was founded by the Jurchens, a people from Manchuria, under their chieftain Wanyan Aguda. The Jurchens rebelled against the Khitan Liao dynasty and, in an alliance with the Chinese Song, destroyed it. They then turned on the Song themselves and captured the Song capital, Kaifeng, forcing the Song court to flee south and establish the Southern Song. The Jin ruled northern China with a mix of Jurchen and Chinese institutions, and their emperors increasingly adopted Chinese culture. The dynasty was weakened by Mongol pressure and by floods and rebellions, and it was finally destroyed by the Mongols and the Southern Song working together.
