Almohads

from 1121 to 1269

The Almohads were a Berber Muslim dynasty that rose from the Atlas Mountains of Morocco in the twelfth century, following the preaching of Ibn Tumart, who declared himself the Mahdi and denounced the ruling Almoravids as corrupt. After his death, his successor Abd al-Mu'min conquered Marrakesh and built an empire that included Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and the Muslim part of Spain, al-Andalus. The Almohads patronised philosophers such as Averroes and Ibn Tufayl, and left monuments including the Koutoubia mosque in Marrakesh and the Giralda in Seville. They were defeated by the Christian kingdoms at the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212, which began their decline, and the empire was replaced by the Marinids in Morocco and other states.
