The Heisei era was the period of Japan's history that corresponded to the reign of Emperor Akihito, beginning on the day after the death of his father Hirohito. The era name means achieving peace. Japan's asset price bubble burst in the early 1990s and was followed by prolonged economic stagnation, often called the lost decades. The period also saw the Kobe earthquake and the Aum Shinrikyo sarin attack in 1995, and the great Tōhoku earthquake, tsunami and Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011. Japanese animation, manga and video games spread widely abroad. Akihito abdicated, the first emperor to do so in more than two centuries, and his son Naruhito began the Reiwa era.
