Salvador Dalí died on 23 January 1989 in Figueres, aged 84. A Spanish artist from Catalonia, Dalí was one of the most prominent figures in Surrealism. Born in Figueres, he studied in Madrid, where he befriended Federico García Lorca and Luis Buñuel, with whom he made the film Un Chien Andalou. His best-known painting, The Persistence of Memory of 1931, shows soft melting watches in a dreamlike landscape. He worked in painting, sculpture, film, design and writing, and his technical skill was matched by a flair for self-promotion and eccentric behaviour. He was expelled from the Surrealist group in the 1930s. The Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres, where he is buried, is among the most visited museums in Spain.
