French Third Republic

from 4 September 1870 to 10 July 1940

The French Third Republic was the republican regime of France that was proclaimed after Napoleon III was captured by Prussian forces at Sedan during the Franco-Prussian War. Its early years were marked by the siege of Paris, the Paris Commune and the loss of Alsace and most of Lorraine to Germany. Its constitutional laws of 1875 created a parliamentary system dominated by the legislature, with frequent changes of government. The regime survived crises such as the Dreyfus Affair and the First World War, which ended in victory, and oversaw the expansion of a large colonial empire and the separation of church and state in 1905. It ended with the defeat of 1940, when parliament voted full powers to Marshal Petain, who set up the Vichy regime.
