Vladimir Lenin was born on 22 April 1870 in Ulyanovsk. A Russian revolutionary and political theorist, Lenin led the Bolshevik party and, after the October Revolution of 1917, headed the new Soviet government. He had spent years in exile in Europe, developing his version of Marxism, which emphasised a disciplined party of professional revolutionaries. He led the Bolsheviks through the Russian Civil War, introduced War Communism and then the New Economic Policy, and in 1922 founded the Soviet Union. His government also set up the secret police and suppressed political opponents. Strokes left him incapacitated in his last years, and Joseph Stalin eventually emerged as his successor.
