Ivan Bunin was born on 22 October 1870 in Voronezh. A Russian writer, Bunin was a poet and short-story writer known for precise, sensuous prose and for his nostalgic evocation of the Russian countryside. His works include The Village, The Gentleman from San Francisco and the autobiographical novel The Life of Arseniev, as well as poems and translations of Longfellow's Hiawatha. A bitter opponent of the Bolshevik revolution, he emigrated to France in 1920. In 1933 he became the first Russian writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. He lived out the Second World War in the south of France.
