Founding of Tsinghua University

30 March 1911

Tsinghua University in Beijing was founded as Tsinghua Xuetang, a preparatory school for students who were to be sent to study in the United States. It was financed with funds returned by the United States from the indemnity China had been forced to pay after the Boxer Rebellion, and it was built on the grounds of a former imperial garden. After the Republic of China was established, it was renamed Tsinghua School and later became a full university, in 1925. It moved to the south during the war with Japan, joining Peking and Nankai universities in the Southwest Associated University in Kunming. Since 1952 it has specialised in engineering and sciences, and it is now among the best-ranked universities in China, with many senior Chinese leaders among its alumni.
