Founding of Saint Petersburg State University

22 January 1724

Saint Petersburg State University is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Russia. It traces its origins to a decree of Peter the Great, which led to the creation of an academic university and gymnasium attached to the Academy of Sciences in the new capital. The modern university took shape in 1819 as Saint Petersburg Imperial University. Dmitri Mendeleev, who devised the periodic table, taught there, the physiologist Ivan Pavlov studied there, and Vladimir Lenin passed his law examinations there as an external student. Vladimir Putin and Dmitry Medvedev both studied law at the university. It is one of the largest research universities in the country.
