Sciences Po, officially the Paris Institute of Political Studies, began as the Ecole libre des sciences politiques, a private school established by Emile Boutmy in Paris after France's defeat in the Franco-Prussian War. Boutmy wanted to educate a new elite able to lead the country, and the school trained generations of diplomats, civil servants and politicians. After the Second World War, in 1945, the school was nationalised and replaced by the Institute and the Fondation nationale des sciences politiques, and the training for the senior civil service was moved to the new Ecole nationale d'administration. Its graduates include presidents such as Jacques Chirac and Emmanuel Macron, and it is one of France's best-known institutions for the social sciences.
