Establishment of Yellowstone National Park

1 March 1872

Yellowstone National Park was created when United States President Ulysses S. Grant signed a law setting aside land in the Wyoming and Montana territories, with a small portion extending into Idaho, as a public park. It is widely regarded as the first national park in the world. The area sits over a huge volcanic caldera and contains about half of the planet's geothermal features, including geysers such as Old Faithful, as well as herds of bison and elk, wolves and grizzly bears. An 1870 expedition and reports by scientists and painters helped persuade Congress to protect it. The US Army ran the park until the National Park Service was founded in 1916.
