Founding of Organisation internationale de la Francophonie

20 March 1970

The Organisation internationale de la Francophonie is an association of governments of countries and regions where French is used, or where people have a historical or cultural link to it. It traces its origin to a convention signed in Niamey, which created an agency for cultural and technical cooperation, promoted by leaders including Leopold Sedar Senghor of Senegal, Habib Bourguiba of Tunisia, Hamani Diori of Niger and Prince Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia. It adopted its present name in 2005 and has members and observers from all continents. It promotes the French language, cultural diversity, education and democracy, and holds regular summits.
