Founding of Offenburg

1148

Offenburg is a city in Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany, in the Kinzig valley, close to the Rhine and the French border. It developed in the Middle Ages and became a free imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire, later passing to Baden. It is known for its role in the German democratic movement: in 1847 radicals gathered at Offenburg and put forward demands for freedom of the press, a people's army and other liberal reforms, in what is called the Offenburg Program, and it was again the venue of meetings in the revolution of 1848 and 1849. A monument to the English sailor Francis Drake stands in the city, and the town is also the home of a large university of applied sciences.
