Poblet Monastery is a Cistercian abbey in the Prades Mountains of Catalonia, in northeastern Spain. It was founded with the support of Ramon Berenguer IV, Count of Barcelona, after the Catalan conquest of the region from Muslim rule, and it was first settled by monks from the French abbey of Fontfroide. Over the following centuries it grew into one of the wealthiest and most influential monasteries in the Crown of Aragon and became the burial place of its kings. Its fortified walls, cloister and church form one of the largest Cistercian complexes in Europe. The monastery was sacked and abandoned in 1835 after the Spanish confiscation of church property, and it was restored in the 20th century, when monks returned. UNESCO added it to the World Heritage List in 1991.
