Founding of Leipzig University

2 December 1409

Leipzig University was founded in 1409 by Frederick I, Elector of Saxony, together with his brother William II, after German-speaking professors and students left the University of Prague following a dispute over voting rights in the university. The new university in Leipzig quickly became one of the leading universities in the Holy Roman Empire. Famous people connected with it include the philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, who was born in the city, Goethe and Nietzsche, who studied there, and in modern times Angela Merkel, who studied physics. In the German Democratic Republic it was known as Karl Marx University. It is among the oldest universities in Germany that have operated without interruption.
