Founding of University of Copenhagen

1 June 1479

The University of Copenhagen is the oldest university in Denmark and one of the oldest in Northern Europe, founded by King Christian I with the permission of Pope Sixtus IV. It began with four faculties, and it was closed during the Reformation before being re-established as a Lutheran institution. The university is the largest in Denmark in terms of students and research, and it has been a centre of Danish intellectual life. Its alumni and staff include the physicist Niels Bohr, who developed his quantum model of the atom in Copenhagen, the philosopher Soren Kierkegaard and the writer Hans Christian Andersen. Many of its affiliates have received Nobel Prizes.
