The Battle of Grunwald, known in Lithuania as Žalgiris, was fought in northern Poland between the army of the Teutonic Order, led by Grand Master Ulrich von Jungingen, and the allied forces of the Kingdom of Poland under King Władysław II Jagiełło and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania under Grand Duke Vytautas. It was one of the largest battles of medieval Europe, and it ended in the destruction of the Teutonic army, including the death of the Grand Master and many leading knights. The Order held the fortress of Marienburg, and by the First Peace of Thorn in 1411 it lost little land, but its power and prestige were broken. The battle became a national symbol for Poles and Lithuanians.
