Founding of International Handball Federation

11 July 1946

The International Handball Federation is the governing body of handball, founded in Basel, Switzerland, in the summer of 1946 by delegates from several European countries. It succeeded an earlier body, the International Amateur Handball Federation, which had been set up in 1928 and had organized the 1936 Olympic field handball tournament. The federation organizes the men's and women's World Championships and sets the rules of the indoor game, which entered the Olympic program in 1972 for men and 1976 for women. It has its headquarters in Basel and today includes national federations from every continent, with the strongest traditions in Europe.
