The Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow is the leading museum of Russian art. It began with the collection of the merchant Pavel Tretyakov, who started buying contemporary Russian paintings in the middle of the 19th century and in 1892 donated his collection, with his brother's, to the city of Moscow. The museum's well-known facade in Russian revival style, designed by the painter Viktor Vasnetsov, was added in the early 1900s. Its collection runs from medieval icons, including Andrei Rublev's Trinity, to works of the 19th-century Wanderers and Soviet and modern art. A second building, the New Tretyakov Gallery, houses 20th-century art.
