Dwight D. Eisenhower was born on 14 October 1890 in Eisenhower Birthplace State Historic Site. An American general and Republican statesman, Eisenhower was the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe during the Second World War, directing the D-Day landings in Normandy in June 1944 and the campaign that defeated Germany. After the war he served as army chief of staff, president of Columbia University and the first supreme commander of NATO. He won the presidency in 1952 and served two terms, ending the Korean War, launching the Interstate Highway System and sending federal troops to enforce school desegregation in Little Rock. In his farewell address he warned of the influence of the military-industrial complex.
