The American Broadcasting Company, known as ABC, is one of the main television and radio networks of the United States. It emerged in the early 1940s as an independent company when NBC was required by American regulators to sell one of its two radio networks, the Blue Network, which was purchased by Edward Noble, the maker of Life Savers candy. ABC moved into television in the late 1940s and was for years the weakest of the big three networks, but it grew through popular entertainment and sports programming. In 1985 it was bought by Capital Cities, and in 1996 it became part of The Walt Disney Company, which still owns it.
