Sangay National Park in Ecuador lies in the Andes and ranges from tropical rainforest on the lower slopes to glaciers on the peaks. It includes two active volcanoes, Tungurahua and Sangay, the latter being one of the most active volcanoes in the world, with almost continuous eruptions, and the extinct volcano El Altar. The park shelters a wide range of wildlife, including the mountain tapir, the spectacled bear, the Andean condor and the puma. UNESCO inscribed it in 1983 as a World Heritage Site. Poaching, road building and encroachment led to its being placed on the list of sites in danger in 1992, and it was removed from the list in 2005.
