The Empire of Brazil was the constitutional monarchy that ruled Brazil after independence from Portugal, proclaimed by Pedro I, a Portuguese prince who became the first emperor. He abdicated in 1831 in favour of his young son, Pedro II, who reigned for almost fifty years and was a popular, cultured ruler interested in science and education. The empire stayed united while Spanish America broke into many republics, and it expanded the coffee economy that was built on slave labour. Brazil was the last country in the Americas to abolish slavery, which it did in 1888, with the Golden Law signed by Princess Isabel. The empire ended in a military coup the next year, which proclaimed a republic and sent Pedro II into exile.
