13P/Olbers is a periodic comet discovered by the German physician and astronomer Heinrich Wilhelm Olbers in Bremen, who found it with a small telescope. It belongs to the Halley-type comets, with an orbital period of about seventy years, and returned in 1887 and 1956, with its latest return in 2024, when it was observed in modern detail. Olbers was a leading comet hunter of his time and discovered a number of them, as well as the asteroid Pallas in 1802 and Vesta in 1807. He also developed a method for calculating the orbits of comets that was widely used, and he is known for the paradox that bears his name, concerning the darkness of the night sky.
