Discovery of Elara

2 January 1905

Elara is a moon of Jupiter and the second largest member of the Himalia group, a cluster of irregular moons that orbit far from the planet and probably came from a single captured body. It was discovered on 2 January 1905 by the American astronomer Charles Dillon Perrine at the Lick Observatory in California, shortly after he found Himalia. The two moons were found photographically, and a few more would be discovered with the same method. Elara has a diameter of under a hundred kilometers. It was named only in 1975, after a lover of Zeus in Greek mythology who was the mother of the giant Tityos.
