Sigmund Freud died on 23 September 1939 in London, aged 83. An Austrian neurologist, Freud founded psychoanalysis, a method of treating mental disorders by talking with patients about their thoughts, dreams and memories. He proposed that much of the mind is unconscious and shaped by childhood experiences and repressed desires, and developed concepts such as free association, the Oedipus complex and the division of the mind into id, ego and superego. The Interpretation of Dreams, published in 1899, is one of his key works. His theories were widely debated and criticised, but they had a deep influence on psychology, medicine, art and culture. He left Vienna after the Nazi annexation in 1938 and died in London.
