Construction of LaGuardia Airport

15 October 1939

LaGuardia Airport is an airport in the borough of Queens in New York City, on the shore of Flushing Bay. It opened as New York Municipal Airport and was named for Fiorello La Guardia, the mayor who championed a modern airport inside the city limits. Its Marine Air Terminal, built to handle the seaplanes of transatlantic flying boats, remains in use and is admired for its Art Deco design. The airport had long been criticized for old and cramped terminals, and in the 2010s it underwent a very large reconstruction. Because of its short runways and location, it handles mostly domestic and short-haul flights, while international traffic is concentrated at John F. Kennedy Airport.
